City and Suburbs Bricklaying Pty Ltd (Trading as Mortar & Surface Restoration) were engaged by us to undertake the renovation work to the Tuck Pointing of the brickwork at Windsor and Prahran Railway Stations. This project has run for approximately 6 months and has just been completed.

The client was the Department of Transport via Connex Mainco joint venture, and all departments are very happy with the results. The stations were built in the late 1800’s and were in poor condition, having been left with very little maintenance over the last 50 years. The Hawthorn bricks were still in reasonable condition but the mortar had been severely washed out in some places, leaving the Tuck Pointing virtually non existent.

Mark Tink and his crew were very professional in their approach, working long hours and producing work to a very high standard. The job entailed a number of variations and Mark was always approachable and was able to help us matching existing stonework along with some very significant retaining wall repairs.

I am more than happy to recommend Mark and his crew for similar projects, as Windsor and Prahran Stations are testament to their skills and are on view for anyone to see.

We have been involved with brick mortar and brickwork quality for over 40 years and as private analysts and specialist consultants we have been advising the construction industry for the past 21 years.

In about 1997 we were introduced to Mortar & Surface Restorations and subsequently conducted our own internal analysis of the materials used in the re-pointing process and attended on site to observe the processes used for raking the existing sub-standard mortar from bed courses and perpends.

We were impressed by the neatness and cleanliness of the raking processes and the use of vacuum collection of the dust created when removing the old mortar was an innovation we had not previously witnessed. The procedures were most effective, clean and efficient.

The replacement mortar used for re-pointing was sampled and tested and found to far exceed the properties normally present in traditional mortars and the inclusion of emulsifiers in the new mortar resulted in greater impermeability and bonding properties.

The Mortar & Surface Restoration organization is recommended by our consultancy on the basis of our investigation and assessment and we inform our clients that whilst other organizations may claim to perform the same work we make our recommendation on the basis of our knowledge of the care and expertise demonstrated by the Mortar & Surface Restoration team.

The Corporation of Naracoorte has recently completed $1.6 Million worth of renovations to the Naracoorte Town Hall. A very important part of these renovations was the badly needed restoration work to the exterior stonework. The old Town Hall had been suffering from the effects of many years of weathering and the local freestone was in desperate need of proper restoration to return it to its former glory.

Mr. Mark Tink "Brickwork Restoration" was awarded the contract. The Corporation of Naracoorte is extremely happy with the results. The repointing and restoration techniques used have truly enhanced the appearance of the Town Hall and is testimony to the ability of these skilled tradesman.

Further to our recent discussion in relation to this laboratory's recommendation for the repair of faulty mortar joints and the procedures used by your organisation for the same, we considered your comments to resolve any problems that our standard recommendations may have caused, to accommodate your method of repointing, which we approve, we have expended the text of our reports adding the following:
"If the work is to be contracted out to 'Brickwork Restoration' company, which specialises in such work, the above recommendations may be varied to accommodate the technique of repointing developed by this company.
Their 'Mortar Extrusion System' for the repair work involves the use of a specially formulated mortar, which when compared with an ordinary mortar, claimed to form superior bond between the surface of the old mortar and the brick.
For this reason their system requires the replacement of only 15 to 20 mm of the old mortar, which as I understand, they guarantee will ensure the long term durability of the mortar joints."
